Wintertime woes of summertime clothes
It's been chilly to downright cold for quite a few months now, but we've crested the peak and warmer days are just a couple months away. It's this final stretch that really tests our resolve to stay active and healthy. We've pushed through the holidays, and now we just wait, wait for sunny day activities to bring us out of our hibernation. It's quite common for people to gain weight over winter. We eat through the holidays, we eat for comfort on cold nights, we tend to eat richer foods and we tend to be less active. Get on top of the winter weight gain now, so you are in shape and ready for the wardrobe of summer.
The biggest contributor to the curvy winter figure is food. Luckily this can easily be controlled if you are willing to experiment in the kitchen or have Veestro deliver! It is time to get familiar with the fresh produce of February. You're probably not craving a Cobb salad right not, but winter salads are much deeper, greener and heartier than summer salads. Start thinking about spinach, kale, arugula, cabbage, radicchio, chard and collard greens. These are all richly flavored and nutrient packed greens great for winter salads and robust enough for cooking into a variety of dishes. If you don't know how to begin, try Veestro's Kale and Quinoa Salad!
Now get out of the potato rut and embrace the root vegetables of winter! You have most likely been passing by these gnarled, often dirt caked, rock looking veggies, so you've been missing out on the rich, comforting dishes they create. If you want warm and sweet look for sweet potatoes, yams, beets and carrots. Winter squash is also a soothing food. Try Veestro's Mushroom Risotto for a cold night in. If you want more spice and a bold flavor, cook with parsnips, ginger, celery root and arguably garlic and onion, though they are more bulbs than roots. Finally if you want an earthy and nutty dish, try sunchokes (Jerusalem artichoke), rutabagas, and turnips.

Now try some of the trendiest cruciferous vegetables of the season! Dive into broccoli, cauliflower, artichokes and brussels sprouts. Most of us grew up with broccoli and can easily integrate it into our dinner, but cauliflower, artichokes and brussels sprouts have made a culinary comeback this season. Artichokes are a spectacular addition to any meal, whether preparing the classic artichoke dip or getting creative with the intricate rigid structure of the vegetable and stuffing it with your own concoction. Another delicious winter evening meal is rich vegetable stew. If you just don't have the time, order up Veestro's Golden Chickpea Stew!
In winter we sometimes need a little summer. Did you know oranges are best in winter and satisfy that juicy, bright flavor of the sun. Add a bit more citrus to your day with mandarins, tangerines and grapefruits. Or for a spot of red, break open a delectable pomegranate.
