5 things you might not know about meatless monday, but should.
Trending: Meatless Mondays! Maybe you’ve heard it on TV, seen it on our blog, or on a menu at a restaurant? It’s not a new idea, but the buzz started up again and the momentum isn’t stopping; thanks to Meatless Monday, a non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaign. Don’t worry if you aren’t familiar or know all the details—you’re not alone.
Here’s a little Meatless Monday breakdown for you:
1. Where did it come from?During World War I and II, the U.S. Food Administration advised families to help by cutting down their consumption of main food staples. In 2003, the concept was revived by the global initiative Meatless Monday, to bring health awareness to the public. They addressed improving our health and planet with a simple and easy campaign. Swap out the meat for plants in every meal, just one day a week. It’s a small, but very impactful change. Now, people in more than 40 countries have caught on and embraced it, including restaurants and schools.
2. Why Mondays?
Let’s be honest. Mondays can be rough for some of us… because we’re reminded the weekend is over. On the other hand, since it’s the first day in a brand new week it can be an opportunity to start off on the right foot and your chance to set a positive tone. By implementing healthy habits, you’ll be armed and ready to tackle the week. Give it a try with our plant-based meal options.
3. Is meat-free better for me?
Research shows that plant-based diets are generally the healthier option: people who eat less animal products have lower rates of serious medical conditions, obesity, high blood pressure, arthritis and dementia. There is also support that low saturated fat diets based on plants and fiber are linked to lower risks of cancer and disease. Plants have amazing healing properties and are rich in protein, so you’ll be feeling and looking good!
4. And the environment?
The meat production process is extremely wasteful, contributing to our major climate change problem. Massive amounts of water are drained, deforestation of the rainforest, pesticides used in the feed and water and air pollution are just a few examples of the toll it’s taking on the planet. What is more worrisome is the data that shows that the two main gases -methane and nitrous oxide- are even more dangerous than CO2. These three together emit a significant amount of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.
5. Wait, celebrities are on board?
Martha Stewart, Beyoncé and Jay Z, Bill Clinton, Wolfgang Puck, Al Gore, Jennifer Lopez, Paul McCartney and Oprah Winfrey have all promoted how beneficial eating more meat-free foods can be.
Bonus: Meat costs much more than plants! Satisfy your taste buds and your wallet, by building your Monday meals around veggies, beans, and grains. Going meatless even one day a week can be cost-effective. Just another reason to thank plants.
