What You Eat Can Impact Climate Change
What if the food choices you made impacted not only your health but the health of our climate? As it turns out, the food choices you make can either help or harm climate change, and we all have a duty to help try to reduce our carbon footprint.
The good news? A plant-based diet is one of the best choices you can make for not only your health but for the health of the planet.
Read on to learn about how exactly what you eat can impact climate change.
How The Foods You Eat Impact Climate Change
Choosing to eat plant-based could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emission. This is especially true for reducing the consumption of beef and lamb. Studies have found that greenhouse gas emission per gram of protein found in beef and lamb is a whopping 250 times greater than fish, chicken, and dairy products. And, while reducing your beef intake can help reduce greenhouse gas emission, going totally plant-based can help even more.
Why? Because there is less gas emission in twenty servings of vegetables than in one single serving of beef. Now isn’t that telling us something? This just goes to show that plants are the answer to reducing emission and protecting the planet.
What the Future Holds if We Keep Eating So Much Meat
What’s even more startling about climate change in relation to the foods we eat, is that a study found that the environmental pressure on food systems could jump up by an entire 90% by the year 2050. This is what’s projected to happen if we continue to eat a western diet full of processed meats.
The biggest issue with this is that according to Marco Springman of the Oxford Martin Program and head of this study, this increased burden on our food systems would then go beyond the boundaries that would be deemed safe. Springman states that ecosystems could then become unstable and lead to climate change, water pollution, and also disrupt forest ecosystems.
Springman also goes on to say that a healthier planet would require more plant-based eating and improved farming practices.
What We All Can Do to Turn Things Around
We all have a duty to do our part in helping to turn things around. Reducing meat intake and focusing on plant-based eating is key. By doing so, we as a planet can help reduce the amount of energy required to make the foods we consume, reduce greenhouse gas emission, and how much land is used for food production, as well as how many pollutants are used during farming practices.
Veestro makes it easy to start eating plant-based with ready to enjoy meals delivered straight to your door. You can enjoy a nutritious diet, nourishing your body with the food it needs to thrive, while also doing your part in taking care of the environment and reducing your carbon footprint.
Plant-based eating is a two for one deal. You do something really amazing for your overall health, while also doing your part in preventing further decline in our ecosystem, one healthy plant-based meal at a time.
